Biography
Harlan M. Krumholz, MD, SM, is a cardiologist and the Harold H. Hines, Jr. Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University School of Medicine. He is the Director of the Yale-New Haven Hospital Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) and Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program at Yale. Dr. Krumholz is an international leader in the field of outcomes research, contributing importantly to its recent development and growing influence in practice and policy. His research has focused specifically on generating knowledge that will improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Studies from his group have identified gaps in the performance of the health care system and targets for intervention, and have tested strategies for improvement. His research has directly led to improvements in the use of guideline-based medications, the timeliness of care for acute myocardial infarction, public reporting of outcomes measures, and the current national focus on reducing the risk of readmission. His work influenced several provisions in the health reform bill.Dr. Krumholz received his undergraduate degree from Yale College, a Master’s in Health Policy and Management from the Harvard School of Public Health, and an MD from Harvard Medical School. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the American College of Cardiology, the Board of Directors of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and the Board of Governors of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), newly established by the Affordable Care Act. He is an elected member of the Association of American Physicians, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, and the Institute of Medicine.
