Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences: Women's Reproductive Health Research Career Development Center
BiographyDr. Illuzzi, a graduate of Harvard Medical School, completed her OB/GYN residency here at Yale-New Haven Hospital. After working as a clinical physician for several years, she returned to the department to pursue a career in academic medicine. She received the designation of Women’s Reproductive Health Research Scholar and was supported by a career development grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Development. In 2006, she completed a Master of Science degree in Epidemiology at the Yale School of Graduate Studies and is now a resource to the department for statistical work, clinical study design and interpretation. Dr. Illuzzi’s research focuses on examining and building upon the evidence surrounding obstetric intervention and its impact on maternal and neonatal outcomes, especially among low risk women. Topics include the use of episiotomy, epidural analgesia, the role of midwifery in obstetrics, prophylaxis to prevent vertical transmission of group B streptococcus, and the increasing rate of cesarean section. In addition to her research, Dr. Illuzzi also serves as Director of Medical Studies in Obstetrics and Gynecology; she regularly lectures, leads seminars, and is actively involved in curriculum design with strong emphasis on evidenced-based teaching in reproductive health. She is a supportive mentor to the medical students and has worked with many who have conducted thesis work in our department.
